The Lopez Lions club issued a formal thank you to the island community this week. “A big ‘thank you’ to all of the people on Lopez Island who generously contributed to the Lopez Lions Club’s food drive for the Lopez Food Bank on March 26.” said an email from the club.

“As a result of the food drive, (held to celebrate “Lions Day” in the San Juans and the Lopez Lions Club’s 35th anniversary on Lopez Island,) 24 boxes of much-needed groceries and $400 were delivered to the Lopez Food Bank.”

Lion member Fritz Baesman said he was “astounded” at the response the community gave them. “The people of Lopez Island are so caring and generous, their response was overflowing.” He went on to add the response was so great that “we could not fit all of the filled boxes into the bed of the truck; we ending up stowing some on the passenger-side seat, and then finally using another car to take the rest of the overflow….I know that the people of Lopez Island are really special, and their response to this food drive truly confirmed it.”
