Doug James passed away peacefully at home with his family who loved him so much on Aug. 27, 2015. He was born on Dec. 11, 1930, in Pasadena, Calif.
Doug was known for his strong work ethic. His first enterprise was selling eggs from his very own chickens at 6 years old. In his 20s, he worked nights as a police officer and days running his own business, Newport Floor Covering in Newport Beach, Calif.
In 1978, Doug and his wife Colleen moved to Lopez Island from Laguna Beach, Calif. He opened Doug James Floor Covering shortly thereafter and built a successful business that is still in existence today. True to form, he worked until shortly before his death. Doug James Floor Covering will continue to run under the management of long-time employee Jack Walker.
Doug had a lifelong love for all animals, most notably chickens and deer. He fed dozens of deer on his property and raised chickens and pheasants. He enjoyed keeping a vegetable garden, working in his shop, making pottery and doing woodwork. Most of all, Doug loved his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 50 years, Colleen, and a beloved father and grandfather. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for his loved ones. He will be missed every day. Doug was a kind, generous, thoughtful man with a great sense of humor. He was well-loved throughout the islands, and his family thanks his many friends for their support.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Colleen, daughter Michele and her husband Kim, granddaughter Colleen and her fiancé Matt, daughter Linda, sons Doug, Jr. and David and sister Diana. He also leaves behind his precious dog Bella.
