James (Jim) Gallanger passed away December 26, 2017, in Anacortes. Jim was born March 25, 1936, on a small family farm on Lopez Island. During his lifetime, he worked on freighter ships, which allowed him to travel the world, served at a lumber camp in Alaska, and then moved back to Lopez where he did a variety of odd jobs for the locals.
When it became difficult for him to get around, Jim moved to Anacortes where he could be seen shopping and getting around on his scooter. He frequented the Elks Club and regularly gave donations to the Elks Foundation for children’s therapy. Jim was a friendly fellow who loved to tell stories of his many adventures.
Jim is survived by his brothers Jerry Gallanger of Bellingham and Clifford Gallanger of Mount Vernon, his sister Rosie Sonnichsen of Moses Lake, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Alita Gallanger, his brother Phillip Gallanger, and his sister, Pat Kinsella.
The family would like to thank the staff at Rosario Assisted Living in Anacortes for their care during his last few years.
Viewing of Jim and Funeral Service will be held at Lopez Island Community Church on Lopez Island on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 12:30 and 1:00 p.m. respectively, followed by Interment at Lopez Union Cemetery. A reception will be held at Lopez Island Community Church after the graveside service.
