After a year long battle with a brain tumor Nancy passed away peacefully at the Mira Vista Care Center in Mount Vernon, Washington.
Nancy was born in Modesto, California but lived in San Jose and Los Gatos until relocating to Lopez Island in 1997. After graduating from San Jose State College in 1957 she taught at the Daves Avenue School in Los Gatos for thirty-six years (two years of Second Grade and thirty-four years of First Grade). She married her husband Charles in 1962 and they enjoyed nearly fifty-five years together. After Nancy and Charles retired they moved to Lopez in 1997 and built a house on property they had owned since 1973.
Nancy was an incredibly creative person who gave her all to whatever she did. She was always thirsting for new knowledge. She gave freely of her caring and her time. On Lopez Nancy was active in the Birthday Club, Enchanted Quilters, Friends of the Lopez Library and volunteered with the San Juan Preservation Trust as well as being a BLM Monitor on the Lopez BLM lands. She also volunteered with several other organizations on Lopez.
She is survived by her husband Charles, son Jim Givens (Patty), granddaughter Katie, brother Don Mason (Judy), sister-in-law Patti (Givens) Lindquist and sister-in-law Sandy Coffee.
By her request there will be no services. Her ashes will be scattered on Puget Sound.
The family requests that any memorial gifts be made to the San Juan Preservation Trust, Friends of the Lopez Library, or the Lopez Island Historical Society.
