*UPDATE: ALL SPORTS HAVE BEEN CANCELED DUE TO CORONAVIRUS*

This is a rebuilding year for the men and women of the Lopez Island High School golf team. Four players are returning, three of which went to the State Championship last year. Last year, the women placed second among “B” schools, third among “B” and “BB” and, for the third year in a row, ninth against all “A”, “BB”, and ”B” schools. The men did not have enough players to make it to the last day to qualify as a team.
With the kind and very generous support of the Lopez Island Golf Course and our school district, nine women and six men are practicing daily and competing against the seven other teams in the league.
Three seniors, Siri Dye, Shayna Gruenwald and Reese Hamilton, return to the team this year along with freshman Mateus Cary. They all have improved since last May. The other players on the team are eighth through tenth graders who already show great promise. They are Ananda Velo, Andrew Auckland, Anthony Velasquez, Freda Kvistad, Hannah Roberson, Hetty Meissner, Levi McClerren, Lily Stovall, Morgen Limbach, Phoebe McGown and Valentina Rendon.
If things go well, this will be the 18th year in a row that players qualify for the state tournament. Most of all, they will strive to demonstrate the integrity, perseverance, kindness, diligence, helpfulness, honesty and selflessness for which they are recognized by officials, coaches and fellow competitors.
