Lopez began the season with 22 golfers. At the halfway mark of the regular season, the squad still has all 22. And although large numbers make it more fun, this popularity also means increased intrasquad competition as the golfers vie to qualify for the post-season. Only six of the fifteen women can go to District, and several have already posted qualifying scores. Siri Dye medaled in the first and fourth match, Kate Combs won the second match, and Nora Zapalac won the third match. Among the men, Tobin Arden medaled in all four matches and is well on his way to breaking a 15-year-old men’s record.
Coach Richard Tetu has been impressed with the golfers’ play and comportment. Personal bests have been turned in at every match.
“As always,” said Tetu, “the players have good skills, great attitude, and excellent behavior. They consistently support each other. I couldn’t work with better people.”
The Lobos play their last two home matches on April 18 and 20 at 2 p.m. at the Lopez Island Golf Course. Tetu encourages fans to come watch and help the golfers grow accustomed to playing before spectators as preparation for the post-season tournaments.
