With only a third of the season remaining, both girls and boys basketball teams improved their chances at post-season play with solid wins against league-rival Shoreline Christian on Jan 20. Playing before a large enthusiastic crowd at home, both Lady and Men Lobos led throughout both games, although Shoreline challenged the Lobos in the second halves.
The Lady Lobos were short-handed, with only six players available. Lopez jumped out to an advantage quickly and led 25-9 at the half. But guard Emma Patrick injured her knee late in the half, which meant little rest for the team. Shoreline had a large team and was able to rotate fresh subs. The difference in numbers was obvious in the Lobos’ ability to defend, although Lopez almost matched their first half shooting. The game ended Lopez 45, Shoreline 35, leaving Lopez with a 4 win, 5 loss overall record.
Coach Shane Patrick has been impressed with the girls’ “crazy aggressive” play and increasing confidence with each game. He was especially happy with how different players stepped up to help the team, as was evident in the scoring. Sonnette Roberson led with 14 points, followed by Emma Patrick with 13 (mostly in the first half), Siri Dye with 10, Shayna Gruenwald with 6 and Maddy Zoerb with 2.
The Lobos Men also jumped out to a lead they never relinquished, the first half ending 20-13. Shoreline rallied in the second half and pulled to within 5 points late in the third quarter, but Lopez responded and held off the Chargers. The last few minutes were played in a frenzy of steals and fast breaks. The final score was Lopez 41, Shoreline 30.
Coach M.r. Buffum — who seldom gushes about his players’ success — was enthusiastic about the improvement his team has made but wanted to see more of the team in on the scoring. His hopes were realized as six players contributed to the score. Lichen Johnson led with 15 points, followed by Reese Hamilton with 12 (including several 3-pointers), Josh Kramer with 10, Ellery Jones 2, and Avery Conner and Canyon Hernandez-Doherty with one each. The Men now stand at 3 and 7 overall.
Lopez’ last two regular season home games are Jan. 29 against Orcas Christian and Feb. 3 versus Grace Academy.
