The Lobos Volleyball team hosted the Evangel Classic High Raggants from Marysville on Oct. 9. Lopez entered the contest with a 4-3 record. The first game started slowly, with scoring even until Lopez pulled ahead at Lobos 10, Raggants 6, then 15-7 and finished 25-12. Coach Karrie Warner met with the team before the second game and encouraged them to play closer to the level at which they were capable, to keep pressing, not to let up. The message clearly got across as Betty Burt opened as server and reeled off 15 quick points. Lopez went on to win, 25-6. The third and final game ended Lopez 25, Evangel Classical 10.
The match ended early, which allowed time for Lopez to field the junior varsity squad for one game against off-island opponents. The Lobos had to fight for every point, the game tied at 14 all, then 15 all, before the visitors moved ahead. Final score: Raggants Varsity 25, Lobos JV 22.
Incidentally “Raggants” are mythical, horned, winged creatures that guard doorways to other worlds, featured in the animated Wingfeather Saga series.
